One of the most common type of hair loss is hair loss in men, which is otherwise known as “androgenic alopecia.” Hair loss in men generally develops as a function of age – and once was once thought to skip a generation (i.e. to move from grandfathers to grandsons). Modern geneticists have since confirmed that a grandfather's baldness can have an effect on his grandson (even if the father isn't bald), but that the grandson in question will also be affected by his parents' genetic makeup.

How pervasive is male baldness? If you're already bald, this might be comforting; but if you haven't started balding yet, you are probably going to cringe. Male balding actually occurs in 66% of male adults in one form (there are many) over the course of their lifetime.

So, why does hair loss in men occur? While hair loss in men scientists have postulated a number of answers, nothing has really stuck as definitive. Some evolutionary biologists say that hair loss in men actually makes them more appealing to women as a potential partner. They say that this is an evolutionary advantage that has allowed these genes to be passed from generation to generation. There is also the possibility that it is a defect, but there is no definitive answer in any case.

Is there any way to prevent hair loss? Not really. The only way to prevent hair loss in men is to take current prescription and over the counter drugs and topical gels that allow you to start to regrow your hair. You have probably seen commercials for Rogaine, which uses the drug Minoxidil to do exactly that.

If you have certain forms of hair loss, you may not be able to regrow your hair; in which case, you may want to consider purchasing a wig, consulting a specialist, or shaving your head partially bald. With the right arrangements, hair loss in men is not that scary after all!
