Currently, there are two types of of hair loss medication on the market: Propecia and Rogaine. Each of these hair loss medication types affects different results and is actually used in a different way. While Rogaine is applied as a topical gel, Propecia is taken orally.

Both Rogaine and Propecia have proven to be effective forms of hair loss medication. Rogaine's active ingredient is Minoxidil, which is generally concentrated at either two or five percent. “Rogaine Extra Strength” currently uses a five percent concentration – and can be purchased over the counter.

Propecia's active ingredient is Finasteride, which also inhibits hair loss while encouraging hair growth. Unlike Rogaine, Propecia is taken orally (in pill form). Propecia's active ingredient has also been used in applications other than hair loss medication, including medicines that inhibit prostate enlargement.

Both of these medications have reputable histories of hair regrowth in men. Rogaine has a success rate in clinical trials for up to 50% of men who are already experiencing some type of baldness.

In addition to hair loss medication, men who suffer from male pattern baldness can also pursue alternate routes to prevent hair loss. One such alternate route is surgery. There are now certain types of surgery that allow hair to be transplanted into the scalp.

If you have just started to bald, do not despair. You may easily be able to find a hair loss solution that will help you forestall further hair loss – and even help you begin to make gains. If you have been experiencing hair loss for quite some time, your options may be fewer in number, but you should be able to find a cure if you consider all hair loss medication on the market, as well as surgical techniques and special recommendations from your doctor.
